You think this means you're too much, too fragile, too easily rattled compared to everyone else who seems fine. You're not. It just means UNGA's detection system is running hot, picking up on signals most people's systems filter out, and reacting to them before you've had a chance to think it through.
THE SCIENCE PART
Here's what's actually happening, and it starts inside your own body before it ever gets to the outside world.
Think of your body like a house full of sensors, the kind that pick up smoke, motion, sound, temperature. Most people walk around barely aware their sensors exist; they eat when they're hungry, they notice they're tired when they yawn, and that's about it. But some people's sensors are turned up louder, picking up every flicker, every hum, every tiny change in pressure, and reporting it straight to the control room without waiting to be asked. That's interoception, your brain's ability to read signals from inside your own body, your heartbeat, your breathing, that tight feeling in your chest before you've even named an emotion. If your interoception runs sensitive, you're not imagining things; you're actually feeling more, faster, because your internal sensors are picking up more.
But there's a second system working alongside it, and this one's aimed outward instead of inward. It's called neuroception, and it's your nervous system's way of scanning the environment for cues of safety or danger, completely below the level of conscious thought. A shift in someone's tone, a slightly closed off posture, a pause that's a beat too long, your neuroception clocks all of it before your brain has even started forming the sentence "something feels off." It's not a story you're telling yourself. It's a read your body already ran, and finished, before you were consciously in the room.
Put those two systems together and you get someone who feels their own internal state loudly, and reads other people's shifts in state quickly, sometimes both at once, sometimes stacked right on top of each other. That's not oversensitivity. That's a highly tuned detection system doing exactly what it's built to do; it's just tuned louder than most.
THE CHILDHOOD PART
Nobody's born deciding how loud their internal alarm system should run. That gets calibrated early, based on how much accurate, early warning actually mattered in the environment you grew up in.
Maybe the mood in the house could shift fast, so learning to read a change in tone, a change in someone's posture, a change in the air a full minute before anything happened out loud, actually kept you safer. Maybe your own feelings got labeled as "too much" early on, so you learned to monitor your internal state constantly, checking and rechecking whether what you felt was allowed. Maybe you were the one who noticed things first, when someone was about to blow up, when something was wrong before anyone said it, and that noticing became a skill you leaned on, because being caught off guard felt more dangerous than staying alert.
None of that means something's wrong with your nervous system. It means your nervous system got trained, early and thoroughly, to pick up on signals most people never had to learn to catch. The problem is that training didn't come with an off switch. It just kept running, well into rooms and relationships that are actually safe, where UNGA's still scanning for a shift in tone that isn't a warning anymore, just a normal fluctuation nobody else even registers.
THE GO TO OPTIONS
When the sensitivity spike hits, you usually do one of two things.
Option one, you believe every signal completely and react to all of it as if it's equally urgent, the tight chest, the tears, the sense that something's wrong, all treated as fact instead of data. This feels honest. It's actually just letting a system that's calibrated too loud make every decision, without ever checking whether the alarm matches an actual threat.
Option two, you try to shut the sensors off entirely, numbing out, powering through, telling yourself to just not feel it so much. This feels controlled. It doesn't actually work, because the detection system doesn't turn off just because you told it to; it just gets quieter for a while and then reports back later, usually louder, usually at a worse time.
Neither option addresses what's actually happening, which is a highly sensitive alarm system doing its job in an environment that mostly doesn't require it anymore.
THE HAPPYISH HUMANS SHIFT
Name who's talking and what it is that you're feeling. "This is UNGA. Her sensors are picking up something and reporting it loudly." Then name the actual feeling underneath the reaction, not just "sensitive," the feeling: overwhelmed, exposed, flooded, on edge for no clear reason. Naming the feeling itself, out loud or on paper, is called affect labeling; in plainer terms, name it to tame it. It calms the alarm system down enough that you can actually check whether the signal matches the moment, instead of just reacting to the volume. So, the full move is: "This is UNGA, and what I'm actually feeling is ___." Not just "I'm too sensitive." The feeling underneath it.
Reframe the question. Swap "Why am I so sensitive?" for:
"What did my body just pick up on, and is it actually a threat right now?"
"Is this reaction about this moment, or about how loud my alarm system runs in general?"
"What would it look like to trust that I noticed something, without assuming it means danger?"
"Why am I so sensitive" treats the sensitivity itself as the problem. These questions get you underneath it, to what the sensors actually picked up.
Check the evidence. Separate the sensation from the story.
What the sensation is: a tight chest, a spike of dread, tears rising fast, a room that suddenly feels like too much.
What UNGA added on top: "something is wrong, I need to react right now."
Then ask directly: is there an actual threat here, or is this a familiar sensation showing up in a moment that just resembles an old one? What's the calmer read of the exact same signal? Maybe the room isn't actually unsafe. Maybe it's just loud, and your sensors picked that up faster than everyone else's did.
Find the silver lining, use positive words or affirmations, or reframe the story. Not toxic positivity, just a wider lens. "My sensitivity means I notice things early, and that's a skill, not a flaw." Or, "UNGA reacting loudly just means she's paying close attention; that's protective, not broken." A sensitive alarm system isn't a malfunction. It's information, and you get to decide what to do with it.
Pick some tiny actions.
Put a hand on your chest and take three slow breaths before reacting to what your body just picked up.
Ask yourself out loud, "is this happening now, or is this familiar," before deciding how to respond.
Step away from an overstimulating room for two minutes and let your sensors settle before you decide anything.
Write down one thing your sensitivity caught early that actually turned out to matter.
WHY THE SMALL STUFF WORKS
These small actions work because they give your nervous system time to finish its read instead of reacting halfway through it. UNGA isn't persuaded by being told to calm down; that's like yelling at a smoke detector to stop beeping. But a slow breath, a pause, a hand on your chest, all send your body a direct signal that you're safe right now, which lets the alarm system downshift on its own instead of staying stuck at full volume. The brain doesn't need you to silence the sensors. It just needs a moment to confirm there's no fire, and small, physical actions give it that moment.
FINAL NOTE
You're not too sensitive, and nothing is wrong with a system that notices more than most. Your sensors are doing exactly what they were trained to do, picking things up early, running the read before you're even consciously in the room. That's not a flaw you need to fix. It's a setting you get to learn how to work with.
